European Parliament votes in favor of the “veggie burger ban”

The first step of the “veggie burger ban”, i.e., the regulation banning expressions that invoke the imagery of meat to sell plant products, was taken, as The European Parliament voted with 532 votes in favor, 78 against and 25 abstentions on amendments to the CMO (common organization of agricultural markets) regulation. The vote approves, above all, the amendment from rapporteur Céline Imart (EPP), which prohibits the use of terms related to meat for products that are instead vegetable-based. We will no longer find expressions such as “soy shreds” or “seitan steak” on menus or packages at the supermarket.

European Parliament votes in favor

This is the second attempt, because between 2017 and 2020 there had already been an attempt in the EU to regulate the terminology of vegan products along the lines of what was being done for dairy products (the first to see the terminological distinction between animal and veg products protected). It remains to be seen whether the process will go through this time, as the amendment now approved by Parliament has already received the OK from the Agriculture Committee.

Now, however, to move forward it needs “agreement among member states in negotiations on the proposal”, writes the Sole 24 Ore: for the process to go through (and thus the ban to become effective) it must wait until at least 2028. The leather world, which in its own way is hoping for such a European regulation against so-called “vegan leather”, is watching closely.
