The Leather & Hide Council of America (LHCA)’s President Kerry Brozyna travelled to Chennai this month to address trade challenges stemming from India’s new tariff measures.
Brozyna met with the Indian Council for Leather Exports (CLE) following U.S. President Donald Trump’s steep 50% tariffs on India. During his visit, he toured several tanneries that process U.S. hides, including a facility making shoes for U.S. brands. He said: “A 50% tariff on their finished goods will take them out of the game.”
Despite the challenge, Brozyna expressed optimism: “On the upside, we think it is temporary, and India has not retaliated.”
LHCA has also reportedly been working with CLE on a memorandum of understanding aimed at boosting U.S. hide and wet blue exports to India, strengthening ties between the two industries.
