We have to credit Leather UK for sharing this brilliant story, shining a light on the incredible longevity of leather.
The 5,000 strong shoe collection from the Magna Roman Fort on Hadrian’s Wall in the UK includes 2,000 year old tiny baby booties, elaborate leather summer sandals and marching boots.
This UK leather shoe haul adds to even older footwear discoveries across Europe including 6,000 year old shoes from Spain’s Cave of Bats to 5,500 shoes and a well-preserved, 5,500-year-old woman’s leather shoe discovered in the Areni-1 cave in Armenia – made from a single piece of cowhide.
Leather material offers unrivalled durability and longevity – making it a great option for waste reduction and a future sustainable world.
Check out our exhibition page – It’s A Long Story – to discover more about the long life of leather.
