Spain’s leather industry is facing mounting difficulties as export figures continue to fall across the board, according to data released by the General Directorate of Customs.
Between January and February 2025, compared to the same period last year, exports of raw hides dropped by 12.8%, equating to a loss of €2.6 million. Semi-processed hides saw a decline of 3% (€0.3 million less), while tanned hides fell by 9.2%, representing a €6.8 million decrease.
On the import side, Spain’s purchases of fur and leather during the same period presented a mixed picture. Imports of raw hides dipped slightly by 0.2% (€12,600 less), while semi-processed hides increased by 15.7%, a rise of €2.5 million. In contrast, tanned hide imports decreased by 4.2%, or €1.8 million.
Despite the export setbacks, Spain maintained a positive leather trade balance of €29.9 million during the first two months of 2025, indicating that exports still outweigh imports overall. However, the sustained decline in outbound trade poses a challenge for the sector as it navigates global market uncertainties.
