Of the member countries that shared production, export and import data for 2023, most presented negative figures.
Perhaps the most positive news came from China, although its figures were still mixed. Vice-president of the China Leather Industry Association, Chen Zhanguang, told colleagues that, overall, finished leather output in China was down by 6.8% year on year.
Mr Chen said the volume of finished leather that Chinese tanners produced last year was around 600 million square-metres. He added that upholstery leather was up by 16% year on year, and automotive leather by 6%.
Finally, Mr Chen shared that China’s imports of raw materials increased by 16.8% last year, but that imports of finished leather were down by 15%.
