Tanzania Ministry of Industry and Trade told media on July 27, 2010 in Dar es Salaam, capital of Tanzania, that government encourages private-own companies to develop leather processing.

Every year Tanzania needs to import 65% of leather products to meet the market demand, 90% of these imported products are made from synthetic leather. The ministry said there is huge room for Tanzania to develop its own leather industry that not only increase the revenue for the country, but also can reduce foreign exchange spending on import leather products.

According to statistic from Tanzania Ministry of Industry and Trade, Tanzania is the third largest country on livestock farming in Africa, next to Ethiopia and the Sudan.
